The Israelites were the covenant people descended from Jacob (Israel). The nation was organized into twelve tribes: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh), and Benjamin. God delivered them from Egypt, formed them into a nation at Sinai, and led them into the promised land.
