Apostle and Former Tax Collector • Life of Jesus
Matthew was one of Jesus' twelve apostles and is identified in Matthew's Gospel as the tax collector whom Jesus called from the tax booth. The parallel accounts in Mark and Luke call the tax collector Levi. Christian tradition identifies the apostle Matthew with the evangelist associated with the Gospel of Matthew.
