Philip the Tetrarch

Tetrarch of Iturea and Trachonitis • Life of Jesus

Philip was a son of Herod the Great and tetrarch of Iturea and Trachonitis. Luke names his rule when dating the beginning of John the Baptist's ministry. He should be distinguished from the Philip connected with Herodias in the Gospel traditions and from Philip the apostle.
