James was the son of Zebedee, brother of John, and one of Jesus' twelve apostles. Jesus called the brothers from their fishing work and gave them the name Boanerges, Sons of Thunder. James belonged with Peter and John to the close group present at the raising of Jairus's daughter, the Transfiguration, and Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane.
