Paul, also called Saul, was a Jewish Pharisee from Tarsus who initially persecuted the early Church. After encountering the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus, he became one of the most influential missionaries of the early Christian movement. Paul preached throughout Asia Minor, Macedonia, Greece, and other regions of the Roman world, helped establish numerous churches, participated in the Jerusalem Council, endured repeated persecution and imprisonment, and eventually traveled to Rome after appealing his case to Caesar.
